“Make Financial Independence Accessible to Juniors Who Open Their First Ever Bank Account.”

Getting started with banking can be difficult. Learning to budget, managing different accounts, transferring money and developing good banking habits can be intimidating — especially to young adults that haven’t done it before. comdirect had a mission to make this transition into financial independence easier and more accessible. They approached us to design a mobile banking experience that would attract young users new to banking.

Our Process

Creating a Contemporary Digital Experience That Millenials Can Enjoy

Once someone opens an account, they don’t often switch to another bank. This makes young adults an especially valuable user group for banks to attract. Keeping this in mind, we framed our approach around making banking more appealing to a younger audience. A convenient, friendly, contemporary experience was best suited our users’ everyday banking needs. We designed the information architecture and user interface around these key concepts.

User Testing with Target Audience

Testing our prototypes with the actual target audience was invaluable for making important design decisions.

Highlights

The app received a 4.5 rating on the Apple App Store and 4.6 on Google Play in its launch year.

The final outcome, comdirect Mobox, was implemented on both Android and iOS. We were able to leverage young adults’ existing familiarity with mobile interfaces and integrate contemporary visual and interaction patterns into the app. This proved successful — since release comdirect Mobox has received very positive reviews as well as an IF design award. We were delighted to hear that the app was also used by adults because of its clear presentation of information.

Contemporary Design Language

We established a new visual language, reinterpreting comdirect’s corporate design, to appeal to our younger target audience. Vibrant, friendly colours and custom iconography were integrated into the user interface to create an exciting brand experience.

Simplified Money Management

Managing your finances shouldn’t be complicated. We brought forward the most desired features defined in user tests into an easy-to-manage 3-tab structure. Users can seamlessly swipe between screens to quickly check their balance, transfer money, find ATMs and budget their finances.

Supporting Good Habits

comdirect Mobox is designed to teach users how to manage their money better. Using the app’s savings feature, users can develop long-term financial goals by allocating money towards future purchases. Once a savings goal is achieved, funds can be transferred to a Giro Card to spend.

Closing Remarks

MoBox opened a new chapter — for first-time banking users, and for us in designing financial experiences.

While MoBox is no longer in use today, its legacy lives on. It marked our first step into the world of digital banking — creating an app that helped young users build confidence in managing their money for the first time. The experience set a new tone for how financial tools could feel approachable and intuitive, and laid the groundwork for our continued partnership with comdirect. Since then, we’ve expanded our footprint in the financial space, designing modern services that meet users where they are.
