At a Glance

From concept to launch: our comprehensive design journey, creating the digital heart of a pioneering medication dispenser for JDM Innovation.

We've successfully navigated every stage of the design process, from initial research to final product launch. This journey was a true team effort, where we collaborated closely to cover all bases: defining the product vision and requirements, shaping the technological architecture, crafting the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, and finally, bringing it all to life through prototyping and development. The result is a highly innovative medical product that offers easy to use interfaces, for all user groups: Patients, care personnel, care administration and customer support, covering all important functions such as reliable medication dispensing, patient monitoring, video calls, fleet- & patient-management as well as technical maintenance.

Background & Overview

Our collaboration with JDM Innovation began in 2022 with the aim of re-creating the software of a medication dispenser. It resulted in a three-year partnership in which we designed and developed a solid foundation of a new generation medical dispenser ecosystem.

In 2022, JDM Innovation approached zigzag, seeking support for creating their second generation medication dispenser Smila Gen 2. The goal was to re-create the software from the ground up, building a solid and scalable platform for the future. We had the chance to completely re-design the user experience and design multiple applications for the medication ecosystem. Driven by a user-centered design approach, we implemented all the necessary steps to create a meaningful product. A big focus has been put on accessibility and quality management to fulfil the requirements of medical products and incorporate the user group: elderly people. In a range of 3 years, our team of up to 12 people worked on user research, landscape studies, definition of requirements, evaluation of technology, proof of concept, UX/UI, prototyping, software architecture, frontend development, user testing, and deployment. We collaborated with the client in an agile sprint-based process in a team of up to 30 people.

Collaborating at Scale with Agile Workflows

In a team of over 30 designers, developers, and field experts, agile collaboration ensured continuous alignment and execution across disciplines.
5 / 7

User Testing & Validation

Through multiple rounds of user testing, insights were gathered and applied — refining designs and ensuring they meet real-world needs.
6 / 7

Prototyping & Development

Our team translated concepts into working prototypes, then developed and implemented the interfaces and logic for both web and Windows environments.

Engineering for Complexity

Modular systems were built with defined interfaces and thoroughly validated through PoCs and testing — ensuring robust performance under real conditions.

Highlights

The Smila ecosystem is a carefully designed interplay of multiple channels aimed at creating the optimal user experience.

Since the initial kickoff, Smila Gen 2 has evolved into a robust and capable set of applications that work together as an ecosystem for medication management, patient monitoring, and device management.

New UI Design Language – A New User Interface With a Friendly and Clean Look

The new dispenser screen features an appealing visual design tailored to the user group, supporting WCAG Level AA accessibility requirements. It is based on a design system and easily expandable for future extensions. Simple, intuitive interaction and personalization enable friction-free use for patients and care personnel.

Platform for Patient & Device Management – An Easy-to-Use Web Interface for Care Personnel

The dashboard serves as an “at-a-glance” overview that can be personalized to users’ needs. A monitoring view provides visibility into all patients and associated devices. An administration section allows for managing patients and devices, while a statistics section enables generation of monthly reports.

Effortless Maintenance & Issue Tracking – Cloud-Based Platform for Customer Support and Fleet Management

The Support Cloud provides access to all relevant maintenance functions for support-role users, enabling smooth operation of all devices. It shortens response times, supports fleet management at scale, and simplifies case tracking. The improved UI design also helps reduce training time for new users.

Save Time With Seamless Mobile Care Management – Find What You Need, Easily at a Glance

Available for Android and iOS, the mobile app allows caregivers to monitor patients and devices while on the go. It reduces time spent on administrative tasks and increases time with patients, resulting in higher quality care. It also supports seamless communication and clarifies responsibilities in incident management.

Secure On-Site Access for Efficient Maintenance – An Authorized User Menu Enables Maintenance and Configuration On-Site

Separated from the patient interface, this password-protected area is available exclusively to trained care personnel. It enables maintenance and refilling of the device, customization for individual patients, insertion and ejection of medication rolls, fingerprint setup for quick access, and removal of missed medication.

Closing Remarks

Shaping the future of home care — a close partnership with JDM Innovation to build a smarter medication ecosystem

Over the course of three years, our collaboration with JDM Innovation brought together diverse disciplines, united by a shared goal: to shape a medical device ecosystem that is safe, accessible, and truly meaningful in people’s lives. Together, we’ve created a modular, scalable system that supports care at home — for patients, caregivers, and support teams alike. This project is a testament to what’s possible when design, technology, and purpose align. We’re proud to have contributed to such a vital transformation in the healthcare space — and grateful for the trust placed in us throughout this journey.
